A living cave, shaped by the river

Stiffe offers more than stalactites and stalagmites. The Rio Gamberale emerges here from its underground course, bringing the sound and movement of a river, rapids and waterfalls into the visit.

The caves opened to visitors in 1991. Allow about an hour and prepare for cool, damp conditions and plenty of steps.

The river sets the pace inside. Follow its rapids and waterfalls past limestone formations, taking your time on damp, slippery ground and following the guide’s instructions.

The two published distances describe different things. Visit San Demetrio gives 1,400 m for the return route and 150 steps, including 90 in a row. The current official website and GetYourGuide describe a 700 m visitor route.

Four tips for enjoying the caves

You need little equipment, but a few precautions make the visit much more comfortable.

  1. 1. Wear warm clothing

Expect around 9–10°C. Bring a jacket or fleece, long trousers and closed shoes with grippy soles.

Surfaces are damp and can be slippery.

  2. 2. Book a time slot

You do not have to book, but entry without a reservation is not guaranteed. Arrive at the ticket office 20 minutes before your chosen time.

Check the official calendar before you go.

  3. 3. Be prepared for steps

Visit San Demetrio describes 150 steps, including 90 in a row. Although some walkways are described as accessible, the steps and other restrictions mean the whole route cannot be presented as wheelchair- or pushchair-accessible.

A baby carrier is advised if you are travelling with a young child.

  4. 4. Respect the rules of the site

Animals are not allowed, even small ones. Smoking, vaping and touching the formations are also prohibited. Ask your guide before taking photographs.

These rules protect the cave formations and help the visit run smoothly.
